This is a Permanent, Full Time vacancy that will close in {x} days at {xx:xx} BST.

We are seeking a full-time Security Officer to join our Security Team within the Library’s Business Support Department. This is a shift-based role, working a 12-hour rota of four days on (two days, two nights) followed by four days off.

The Security Team plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and security of colleagues, Library users, buildings, and the National Library of Scotland’s collections. The team also responds to unexpected security and safety incidents, requiring calm judgement and prompt, effective action.

We are looking for a reliable and committed team player who is equally comfortable working independently with minimal supervision. You will be honest, dependable, and adaptable, with a flexible approach to work and a positive attitude towards change.

Previous experience in a security role would be beneficial. Knowledge of health and safety and fire safety procedures is desirable, along with a willingness to learn and embrace new ways of working.

You should hold a full driving licence and either already have a First Aid qualification or be willing to obtain one within your first year. You will also be confident using Office 365 and other computer based systems.

You can contact Mark Lamb (m.lamb@nls.uk) if you have any questions about the post. Interviews will be held 27 May 2026. The full job description can be found at the bottom of this page.

Our collections document the influence of Scots at home and abroad, while reflecting the ideas and cultures of the world. They cover all aspects of human endeavour in multiple formats, including books, manuscripts, archives, websites, maps, music, moving image and sound.

We support education, research, business and innovation and our work enhances the reputation of Scotland as a country with a rich cultural heritage and a vibrant future. We are committed to providing easy access to our physical and digital collections and delivering services that are open and available to all. It is a place for inspiration, exploration and enjoyment, where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
