The Vacancy
We are seeking a Head of Collections Care within the Collections Management department, to lead our team of conservators, technicians and interns. As well as conservation and preservation, responsibilities include managing loans, exhibition support and disaster planning. This post has a key role to play in ensuring that the whole organisation supports the Library’s commitment to responsible stewardship. As we approach the Library’s centenary in 2025, we are widening and diversifying our audiences, and need to ensure that our approach to collections care evolves in parallel.
The ideal candidate will have a background of achievement in collections care and preservation within libraries, archives or the wider heritage sector. You will possess strong verbal and written communication skills and have experience of managing staff, budgets and projects. You will also demonstrate good interpersonal skills for team work, and managing relationships with colleagues and visitors. The postholder will build external networks with professional peers, funders and donors, and will contribute to the profession through research, presentations and publications.
The postholder will have the opportunity to work flexibly, where the service allows, and we’ll provide you with training and development opportunities. We have generous annual leave and offer a pension scheme. And of course, you’ll join a team of great colleagues.
We encourage applications from people who belong to marginalised communities particularly people of colour, those from a working class background, disabled and LGBTQ+ people.
Interviews will be held on Thursday 3 October in Edinburgh.
If you would like further information or to discuss the role informally, please email Joe Marshall, Director of Collections Management joseph.marshall@nls.uk
